Arena Birmingham is a large-scale indoor sporting and an entertainment venue located in the Westside district of central Birmingham, with a total seating capacity of 15,800.
Established in 1991, the venue was initially referred to as the National Indoor Arena and later renamed The Barclaycard Arena. Since April 2020, the arena has been known as Utilita Arena Birmingham, although for the duration of the Games it will revert to its unsponsored name, Arena Birmingham.
The arena is home to more than 100 events annually and attracts approximately 700,000 visitors. In past years, the venue has hosted over 30 different sports, including the Gymnastics World Cup Final, 2003 and 2018 IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships and the Trampolining and Tumbling World Championships.
As Official Overlay Supporter of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, GL events UK will be providing, tentage, fencing, containment, tribunes, rigging, carpets, exhibition walling, office cabins, a temporary soundproof press conference room and site lighting at Arena Birmingham. Once fully transformed, this venue will host Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics competitions from July 29th to August 6th.
Over the past decade, the arena has undergone a £20.6 million renovation, which included three ‘sky needle’ light sculptures, a glass façade overlooking the canal side, and improved hospitality facilities. The redevelopment focused on enhancing cultural, economic and employment benefits.
In addition, recent years have seen a £1.2m replacement indoor track installed, with the goal of hosting other major international sporting event in the years following the Birmingham 2022.
