As Official Overlay Supporter to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, GL events UK continues to build on the success of its social value programme in relation to building legacy around Birmingham 2022.

Much of the social value impact to date has been delivered through partnerships with a number of local charities, social enterprises, and community organisations in the West Midlands. Initiatives have included supporting local organisations with their strategic ambitions, before and after Birmingham 2022.

Through this social value programme, GL events UK has successfully partnered The Wood Shack, which is located in Sutton Coldfield, adjacent to its sister organisation and fellow social value partner, The ReUsers. Both of these entities are social enterprises belong to Birmingham’s Jericho Foundation; a charity whose mission is to ‘break barriers to employment and change lives together’ through having a social impact in the communities in which they operate.

Fundamentally, The Wood Shack was set up to be environmentally friendly by reclaiming, reusing, and recycling wood from various sources to create a range of products. This West Midlands wood shop supplies and stores high-quality reclaimed timber, wooden furniture, and firewood for sales to all local businesses, schools, and the public. In addition, the wood waste collection service provides a low-cost, sustainable alternative to skip hire and diverts usable wood from landfills.

The charity is also a proud member of the National Community Wood Recycling Project (NCWRP). Established in 2003, this project was created to assist and develop a national network of social enterprises for wood recycling.

One of the most important services we provide is the training of young apprentices from diverse backgrounds. We play a major part in preparing apprentices for life.

With increasing public support and goodwill, proceeds from the sales of The Wood Shack’s goods or services are reinvested into the Jericho Foundation charity. Each year, the foundation helps support the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups in society, and nurtures individuals through training and employability opportunities.

The Wood Shack itself takes on young and often disengaged individuals as apprentices, helping them to build the confidence and skills required to live, learn, and earn successfully.
