GL events UK is committed to delivering its social value programme for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. In line with this, GL events UK personnel are participating in the Games’ own Volunteer Programme by joining the Commonwealth Collective.

One such individual is Senior IT Support Analyst, Will Kibble, who has recently had his volunteer place confirmed. His role in this programme will be as Technical Team Member for beach volleyball, which will take place at Smithfield in central Birmingham, where GL events UK has begun providing substantial overlay in what will be a major venue transformation.

Will’s position is likely to involve the provision of crucial technical assistance at the heart of the action at this location. Equipped with timing and scoring devices, Will is tasked with reporting statistics to facilitate the scoreboard operator. This role will also consist of aiding with the reporting of results, timings and scoring services by collating sport-specific data.

To be part of this unique event is a rare opportunity, I was instantly motivated to apply!

Will commented: “When considering this opportunity, I felt it would be interesting to do something that was fun, and I liked the idea of being part of something new. I am always drawn towards a change of scenery! A colleague of mine is a fellow volunteer, and after a brief conversation regarding his application for the programme, I was instantly motivated to apply. I pondered over whether to choose a sector that was totally different to my background in IT, to extend the boundaries of my comfort zone. Ultimately, I decided it was best to choose familiarity, to avoid something I wouldn’t enjoy – or crucially – be as helpful doing. Personnel are sacrificing a week of their holiday time in order to contribute in this programme – but to be part of this unique event is a rare opportunity, and from my point of view it’s totally worth it.”

GL events UK wishes Will every success in his endeavours during this programme. His participation and enthusiam will serve as a reminder that the Games provides opportunities to inspire and contribute to the long-lasting legacy that it is designed to bestow on Birmingham and the West Midlands.
