The Canal & River Trust looks after 2,000 miles of waterways, owing to their ethos of “wellbeing for everyone.” With an emphasis on being by the water as a way of improving mental health and general wellbeing, this organisation operates in some of the most populated regions of England and Wales.
Working with an array of volunteers, they aim to make local environments more accessible places, and to strengthen communities by cleaning up litter from the canalside and the watercourse itself.
GL events UK is pleased to be partnered with the Canal & River Trust in the aim of creating better cared-for communities that are more sustainability-friendly. In order to contribute, team members will offer their time during various volunteer days involving litter picking, planting new trees and removal of graffiti in an effort to work towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment for the West Midlands, not only for the impending Games but to be the catalyst of an ongoing nourishment for the area for the foreseeable future .
The first such volunteer day is scheduled to take place later this month, on 17th February. Staff members from GL events UK will be gathering along a stretch of the Wednesbury Old Canal to partake in litter picking, to remove objects that have accumulated along the towpath and in the water, which will then be separated and recycled.
